One afternoon last week, as I was walking out of the office, I found myself singing “Head, shoulders, knees and toes (knees and toes).” I realized what I was singing right about
the time I was pulling out of the parking lot, so I stopped the truck for a minute and tried to figure out when that particular song had found its way into my day.
Camden Myers.
While his older brothers were in another part of the building, Camden was playing in his mom’s office, providing those of us lucky enough to be in attendance with a free concert. Apparently, there were enough calls for an encore that the song took up temporary residence in yours truly.
As I put the truck back in drive, the remainder of the trek home included the windows down and a parade of children’s songs bursting forth… some from my own childhood, others
from some of the most recent years of Vacation Bible School (Yes, Yes, Yes… to V-B-S-S-S)! It was an incredibly entertaining drive home. But it was the song that came to mind as I was pulling into the driveway that I have reflected on a good bit ever since: Deep & Wide.
While the lyrics, written by Sidney Cox (1887 – 1975), a major in the Salvation Army, are focused on the fountain of life flowing from the wounds and sacrifice of Christ on the cross, it has been the simple words of the title God has used to both challenge and encourage me.
As God faithfully continues to grow His church, as He continues to reach Brevard and beyond through our faith family, we will hopefully continue to grow “wide” (numerically,
not waistline). But we must also, and more importantly, grow deep.
Deep in our faith.
Deep in our knowledge and understanding of God’s Word.
Deep in our relationships.
Deep in our love for one another.
This is what Jesus meant when He called us to “make disciples.” Deep.
To quote another one of my favorite artists, Steven Curtis Chapman:
Come on, let’s go!
I’m diving in; I’m going deep…
The river’s deep, the river’s wide, the river’s water is alive,
so, sink or swim, I’m diving in!
Will you join me?
