You’ve probably heard the expressions “elephants never forget” or “a memory like an elephant,” but did you know that these sayings are based on an element of truth? While elephants are the largest land mammals on earth, they also have quite a memory, along with their massive size.
I can’t explain the science, but apparently, elephants use their 10lb brains to encode the necessary information to keep themselves and their herds safe in the wild. It’s all about survival.
For many of us, remembering what we had for breakfast is a stretch, much less what happened last week, last month, or a year ago.
As believers, this is one of the roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives; He serves as a reminder of what Jesus taught us, what we are learning as we study His Word, and how those instructions help us navigate this side of life (John 14:26).
For those of us in Christ, it’s not about surviving… but about thriving, being transformed into all that God has designed for us to be!
As we look to Covenant Sunday (03/30), I want to do everything I can to make sure we remember all that God is saying to us… that these rhythms stay at the forefront of our hearts and minds and don’t get lost in all the activities of the week to week.
From last week…
Rhythm #1: Personal Devotion
If we abide/remain in Him, He will abide/remain in us (John 15:1 – 8).
In other words, as we spend time with Him – personally, individually – we grow in our connection to Him. We develop His heart, we see through His eyes, and our relationship with
Him results in “fruit” that lasts forever.
So,
- choose a time
- choose a place
- choose a reading plan
- choose a method for prayer
- consider journaling
- allow accountability
- and find the best fit
and make sure you spend time with Jesus.
And while it may seem like a lot, don’t get overwhelmed.
What’s that other expression… How do you eat an elephant?
