From 1973 to 1997, just the mention of his name provoked boos and hisses from teams and fans on the opposing side of the field/court. The Savannah Christian Raiders were our crosstown rivals, and Coach Kelley was the mastermind behind both the basketball and football programs. I never played against him, but even in texting my brother to ask a couple of questions for this article, I can still sense the tension.
It was called the “Wishbone,” and it was the coach’s preferred offensive strategy.
It’s not flashy. It’s quite simplistic. But it’s incredibly effective.
It’s a formation in football resembling a wishbone that utilizes the quarterback and three running backs. In short, it provides four options for the offense to move the ball forward, gaining some positive yardage on almost every play.
In evangelism, there are several options and strategies available for sharing the Gospel. Below, you’ll find the 3 Circles, three circles connected by three arrows, easily drawn on a napkin or piece of paper as you’re talking with someone. We’ll share other options another day, but the main point is this:
Gospel conversations aren’t usually flashy.
In fact, they can often be quite simplistic.
But effective? Absolutely.
Like running the “Wishbone” doesn’t necessarily guarantee a touchdown every time, not every Gospel Conversation is going to result in that person deciding to follow Christ. HOWEVER, every Gospel Conversation will “move the ball forward” every time it’s offered. We have to stay in the game, listen to the Coach, and follow the playbook.
Let’s leave it all on the field this week, Church Family!
