One of my favorite restaurants… (I seem to have a lot of those, don’t I?) One of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans is a local icon called Parkway Bakery & Tavern, known for one of the city’s staple delicacies, the po’boy. For those of you who haven’t yet had the opportunity, many consider the po’boy “the ambassador of New Orleans culture” because the sandwich is as diverse as the city it represents. Imagine your choice of shrimp, oysters, roast beef, catfish, ham and cheese, or french fries doused in gravy (yes, you read that correctly) … any of which are liberally served to you on a crisp French loaf of bread. Then, if you so choose, you can request it “dressed,” which means adding any combination of lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayonnaise.
I share that to tell you this… Each year, on each Wednesday in November, Parkway changes it up a bit and serves their Thanksgiving sandwich… and you better be there early if you want one. The restaurant opens at 10:00 am, but the line starts hours before and wraps around the entire block. Freshly baked French bread. Turkey being carved while you’re standing in line. Genuine cranberry sauce, not the jellied stuff from the can. Dressing like grandma makes. Covered with brown gravy. And with every mouth-watering, life-changing bite, you don’t even question whether it was worth the wait in line.
It absolutely was.
This Midweek, we are hosting our second annual church-wide Thanksgiving meal. And while the commute is a little far to have Parkway cater, I can promise you… gathering around the tables with your friends and your church family is always absolutely worth it.
