See! I stand at the door and knock.
Jesus (Revelation 3:20)
If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,
I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me.
From this perspective, we are inside the house… opening the door is our option. Inside the house, we are given the opportunity to decide whether or not we will welcome and host or if we’ll leave the door unanswered and unopened.
Today, as we celebrate our first Homecoming Sunday, I’ve been looking forward to gathering in worship and spending time together around the lunch table (enjoying as much of
everybody’s cooking as I possibly can… I maybe should have brought my stretchy pants!). The desire of my heart is that every person – whether you’ve been here for years or
today is your first time with us – my prayer is that every person who walks through these doors feels like they’re truly HOME!
That said, I’m also praying for another kind of homecoming. For some here this morning – and for others in our lives as well – Jesus is standing at the door of your heart, your life…
He’s knocking and He’s hoping you’ll let Him in.
In a conversation with His disciples (John 14), Jesus told them about His Father’s house, in which are many rooms. Then He told them He was going to prepare a place for them and that He’d come again to bring them there! That message wasn’t just for the disciples; it was for us as well.
If we allow Jesus into our lives, if we welcome Him into the home of our hearts, there is another home waiting for us… an eternal home, in His presence, free of sin, pain, and death. Forever. I believe it’s been said, “Home is where the heart is.” I hope that’s true today here at 170 Washington Avenue. But more than that, I hope it’s in a relationship with Jesus, for today and forever.
Knock, knock.
