I think it’s the baseball legend, Yogi Berra, who is credited with the quote: “It’s déjà vu all over again.”
Do you ever feel that way? Ever felt like you’ve already seen or experienced whatever is going on around you?
This time last year, Julie and I were – getting the house ready to welcome family and friends from out of town – solidifying plans for a graduation party – figuring out what time we needed to be at Mel High to get decent seats for the ceremony – watching as our own child stood on the platform as the graduating seniors were recognized in front of the church
family – trying not to panic as the realities associated with the college journey began to more fully sink in – not crying… definitely not crying… And here we are… again!
We call it Graduate Recognition. And while that is what it is, it’s really much more. To be honest, it’s commissioning. While we celebrate with these individuals and recognize their
achievements and accomplishments, we are also 1) charging them with an even greater task and 2) committing to come alongside them as they fulfill that assignment.
So, what’s their task? What’s their assignment?
Matthew 5:13 -16 Be salt. Be light.
Matthew 28:19 Make disciples.
John 13:34 Love one another.
Acts 1:8 Be a witness.
Ephesians 2:10 Do good works.
2 Timothy 2:22 Pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.
1 Peter 4:10 Serve.
1 John 2:6 Walk just as He walked.
… to name a few.
Yogi Berra also said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”
Graduates, you’re actually just getting started. Congratulations!
